Do farmers and ranchers need to be concerned with water quality?
The Federal FAIRA, the Water Pollution Control Act (better known as the Clean Water Act (CWA)) and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) work together as a team. All farming and ranching enterprises come under the provisions and mandates of the above acts. Additionally, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) should not be overlooked. Destruction of an endangered species habitat by cultivating formerly unplanted acreage is a violation and has severe penalties. In addition, states are encouraged to enforce their own environmental acts, which must be at least as stringent as the federal laws.
